Nohant

Located in the charming village of Nohant, the Chateau of Nohant is where George Sand, one of the most influential writers of the 19th century, spent her childhood and various key moments of her life. While visiting this 18th century mansion full of memories of the Dupin family, you will discover the salon and the dining room where famous artists such as Balzac, Chopin, Delacroix, Flaubert or even Liszt were invited. The tomb of George Sand is located in the family cemetery in Nohant.

Feminist, avant-garde, free spirited, the first one who adopted a man's name to emancipate - George Sand was an extraordinary woman.

Born as Aurore Dupin in 1804, she was highly committed to her struggle for equality between men and women. She marked her era through her political engagements but remained nevertheless a romantic. Being an adventuring enthusiast, she yearned to enter the intellectual scenes where women were forbidden such as restricted libraries or museums. People did not know whether to call her Madam or Sir and she soon found that the title changed depending on what she was wearing at the time. 

Although George Sand was not the first female author, she is often considered as the first professional female writer of fiction. By taking on a man's name she claimed her equality with the male writers of her time. She wanted to be judged purely based upon her talents. She was an idol to women of her time and she forever changed the way that female writers were viewed.
